Statement (Core course, Lesson #09) - 27th October 2022, 7-9pm GMT

‘What’s that over there?’, ‘It’s a dinosaur.’, ‘Oh no!’, ‘Run.’

Statements can be broadly classified into types: interrogative, declarative, exclamative, imperative. These are what communication (and poems) are made of. An accessible but deep dive into linguistics, this class helps you understand the core building blocks in your poet’s toolkit, what effects they have, and how you can use them.

A great class for beginners who are starting to look more closely at language, or for any poet looking to gain more control over their writing.

What will happen in this class:

  • A lecture covering four types of statement with examples from various poems, how they work and what they achieve.
  • Four accompanying exercises to explore each type.

When you register for an online class you will be added to the list of registrants. Classes take place live on Zoom; the day before your class you will be sent a link to your registered Zoom meeting, which you can follow to join the class. Remember to check your Junk folder.

All Zoom sessions will be recorded. After a class or workshop, registrants will be emailed a link to the recording. If you are unable to attend a session for which you have registered, you will still be able to watch the recorded session at your convenience.
