Manuscript Assessment

Have you completed a poetry pamphlet or collection? Want to get your manuscript ready for submission? Not sure if it works? Do you need help with sequencing, themes, structure...?

What is a manuscript assessment?

A manuscript assessment is a professional read-through of your manuscript-in-progress. A manuscript assessment identifies the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript, assesses how well it works as a whole, and helps you to polish your manuscript ahead of submission to publishers or agents. A manuscript assessment looks at your work broadly, seeing how the poems hang together and/or develop as a sequence. A manuscript assessment will help you to spot and fill gaps, hone the voice of your collection, organise your poems to best effect, and direct you toward areas for development. Assessment is a valuable final step towards publication.

If you’re looking for detailed, line by line feedback on individual poems, rather than a broader assessment of your work as a whole, then mentoring may be more suitable than manuscript assessment. Custom arrangements that incorporate elements of both mentoring and assessment can also be made on request.

How it works

When you register for manuscript assessment, you work directly with me, Cat Woodward, via email. Submit a manuscript of up to 50 pages (if your manuscript is longer or shorter, just contact me for a custom quote). I read your manuscript and provide you with considered written feedback, which you can then apply to improve your manuscript ahead of submission.

While I specialise in poetry, I’m also open to assessing other genres, e.g. fiction and non-fiction.
